Frequently Asked Questions

How does solar electricity work?

Norwich Solar is a leading provider of Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems. Using only high quality, industry proven technology and components, we convert the sun’s energy into clean, reliable electricity. But how does it really work?

When Sunlight (solar irradiance) hit’s the silicon panels, the sunlight particles (photons) dislodge the electrons from the atoms in the silicon cells. This creates a flow of direct current (DC) electricity. This DC power is harnessed and run into an inverter, which, very efficiently converts it to alternating current (AC) electricity. The AC power feeds directly into your business’s electrical panel. When your solar array is creating more power than your business is using at any given time, your utility meter will run in reverse as the excess power is sent back to the utility grid. This is called Net-Metering and it requires no batteries!

What if my site is not good for solar electricity production?

If you don’t have a good location for the generation of solar electricity (southerly facing and unshaded), you can still reap the benefits of solar! Your solar array can be remotely located and simply credit your account for the production, provided your array is in your utility service area. This is a benefit of net-metering. Are there any financial incentives for my business to go solar?

Yes. Financial incentives are available right now, helping to make going solar extremely affordable and usually less per kilowatt hour than utilities. Federal incentives are in the form of an “Investment Tax Credit” (ITC) and Accelerated Depreciation (MACRS). State level incentives are often available but vary depending on which state you are in. Norwich Solar is highly skilled at navigating these incentives and even files all the paperwork, when we can, on your behalf. The federal ITC must be filed by you since it is part of your corporate tax return.

How would our company pay for a solar electric system?

Norwich Solar has expertise in the funding of Solar Electric power plants and offers a suite of structured finance options. These include:

  • Third Party Ownership: Requires no capital investment and provides immediate savings through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) or Solar Services Agreement (SSA)
  • Direct Ownership of the solar system and assets
  • Debt or Bond Financing

Does switching to solar energy help the environment?

Solar Photovoltaics (PV) directly reduces demand for fossil fuels and therefore reduces the associated pollutants. Nearly all man-made global warming and air pollution emissions which include, nitrous oxide [NOx], sulfur oxide [SO2], carbon monoxide [CO] and particulates are the direct result of fossil fuel energy usage, whether for electricity or transportation.

Solar is a nearly limitless source of clean electricity without emitting a single toxin or pollutant during operation. A 250 kW (kilowatt) system offsets nearly 4,000 tons of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) over a 30-year production life.

Why should we choose Norwich Solar?

Norwich Solar provides initial consultation, load and site analysis and a custom proposal to our clients at no charge. We are confident in our ability to develop, engineer, build and finance a solar system that benefits our clients both financially and holistically.

Our proprietary installation approach, The EZ-PV MetaModule™, makes going solar easy and more cost effective. Our team of engineers and scientists have devoted over 10,000 hours of R&D time, through our partnership with the Department of Energy (DOE) SunShot program, to the development of this game changing technology! The EZ-PV MetaModule™ eliminates on-site improvisation and inefficiencies by pre-assembling solar panels, racking, and electrical components into one complete MetaModule™. All components are pre-tested in a controlled environment, thus ensuring a high quality, plug-in product that works every time!
